LONDON (Wireless Flash) -- It takes brains and brawn to be a heavy-hitting "chessboxer."

Muscle-bound brainiacs are going toe-to-toe in the ring for chessboxing, a sporting craze where fighters try to outsmart their opponents during four-minute chess bouts, which then lead to three-minute boxing bouts.

The chess-to-boxing lasts 11 rounds, and only the strong -- and smart -- survive.

Tim Woolgar, founder of the London Chessboxing Club, says, "It's a proper competitive sport. It takes a massive amount of training, concentration, and talent. It's probably the most intense sport you could ever play."

According to Woolgar, chessboxers aren't just nerds or meatheads, but thinking men from all walks of life.

He says, "The chess players I know are far from weedy geeks. They could kick the crap out of you."

He hopes to see chessboxing in the Olympics someday, and believes audiences would enjoy a smartypants smackdown because, "Once you see a chessboxing competition, you'll never forget it. It's a gripping spectator sport."
