So That's Where It Got It's Name...
"When Guns n’ Roses began to break into the public consciousness, I was known as a big drinker. In 1988 MTV aired a concert in which Axl introduced me — as usual — as Duff 'the King of Beers' McKagan. Soon after, a production company working on a new animated series called me to ask if they could use the name 'Duff' for a brand of beer in the show. I laughed and said of course, no problem. The whole thing sounded like a low-rent art project or something—I mean, who made cartoons for adults? Little did I know that the show would become The Simpsons and that within a few years I would start to see Duff beer glasses and gear everywhere we toured."

Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo Child named best guitar riff
Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo Child named best guitar riff of all time
Voodoo Child, by Jimi Hendrix has been named the greatest guitar riff of all time, more than 40 years after he first recorded the classic jam.
27 Nov 2009
Late guitar guru Hendrix, who topped the singles chart with the track in 1970, triumphed in a poll of musicians.
The track - full title Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - edged past Guns N'Roses song Sweet Child O'Mine which finished second in the poll by musicians' website MusicRadar.com.
When the site's sister magazine Total Guitar last conducted the survey five years ago, the list was headed by the G N'R song.
The list shows that the older riffs are the best. Just two from the past decade make it into the top 20 - Muse's Plug In Baby at 11 and The White Stripes' Seven Nation Army at 15.
Michael Jackson's Beat It, with its Eddie Van Halen guitar part, props up the top 20.
Voodoo Child - with its distinctive 'wah-wah' opening - was first released on Hendrix's Electric Ladyland album and led on from an earlier track, Voodoo Chile, which was a 15-minute blues jam. Confusingly, by the time it was released as a single in 1970 it too had been named Voodoo Chile.
MusicRadar.com's editor-in-chief Mike Goldsmith said: ''Nearly 40 years after his untimely death, Jimi Hendrix is still the undisputed heavyweight champion of rock guitar.
''Of the current generation of six-string stars, only Jack White of The White Stripes and Muse frontman Matt Bellamy feature in the higher echelons of our list. No surprise given both Bellamy and White share - or have inherited - Hendrix's unique blend of experimental instincts and white-knuckle showmanship.
''Above all though, our poll seems to indicate one thing - in 2009, classic rock still rules.''
More than 5,000 MusicRadar users took part in the poll.
The top 20:
1. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
2. Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine
3. Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love
4. Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water
5. Derek and the Dominos - Layla
6. AC/DC - Back In Black
7. Metallica - Enter Sandman
8. The Beatles - Day Tripper
9. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
10. The Rolling Stones - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
11. Black Sabbath - Paranoid
12. Muse - Plug In Baby
13. Eddie Van Halen - Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love
14. The Kinks - You Really Got Me
15. The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army
16. AC/DC - Highway to Hell
17. Led Zeppelin - Heartbreaker
18. Black Sabbath - Iron Man
19. Led Zeppelin - Black Dog
20. Michael Jackson - Beat It

On the Charts: Kanye Fights Off Axl
On the Charts: Kanye Fights Off Axl, Taylor Swift Gets Black Friday Boost
12/3/08
The Big News: 16 years of anticipation wasn’t enough to get Guns N’ Roses back atop the charts as Axl Rose’s opus Chinese Democracy disappointed the music industry with only 261,000 exclusive-to-Best Buy copies sold, good for third place in the most competitive sales week of 2008. Kanye West’s 808s & Heartbreak also came in below estimated sales figures, but his 450,000 in debut sales were enough to pry the top spot away from BeyoncĂ©’s I Am…Sasha Fierce, which fell to four. Here’s where things get wacky: At number two, ahead of Chinese Democracy and new albums by the Killers and Ludacris, was Taylor Swift’s Fearless, which surged up from four last week thanks to a 23% sales increase. Fearless also crossed the platinum barrier after only three weeks.
Debuts: Ludacris’ Theater of the Mind grabbed number five, coming in ahead of the Killers’ Day & Age at six. Coldplay’s Prospekt’s March EP entered at 15, one slot behind Barry Manilow’s Greatest Songs of the 80s. Paul McCartney side project the Fireman’s Electric Arguments slotted at 67, Scott Weiland's Happy In Galoshes settled in at 96 and Rivers Cuomo’s Alone 2 bowed at 174.
Last Week’s Heroes: It’s no secret that this week’s slate of major releases disappointed at the cash register as Black Friday music sales were down substantially from last year. Among those who also under whelmed were Nickelback’s Dark Horse, which stumbled from two to seven in its second week, and David Cook, whose self-titled album fell from three down to ten. Next week, we’ll find out if Britney Spears’ Circus can muster up the sales to reclaim the apex of the charts.

Axl Rose Gunning for Dr Pepper

Nov 27th 2008
Axl Rose is accusing Dr Pepper of doing the same thing he did for nearly 17 years: Screwing people out of what they were promised.
Rose is accusing Pepper of profiting off the Guns N' Roses name, after the soda company's website malfunctioned during their free Dr Pepper giveaway on Sunday. The 20 oz. handouts were a promise made by Pepper if "Chinese Democracy" ever hit the shelves.
Axl's lawyers are demanding full-page apologies in four major newspapers, an extended period of time to collect on the free suds and payment for unauthorized use the G'N'R name.

Guns N' Roses' 'Chinese Democracy' Makes Radio Debut
Title track from forthcoming album marks group's first radio single in nine years.
By Chris Harris
It's a historic day for Axl Rose: Guns N' Roses fans are finally getting their first official taste of Chinese Democracy.
According to a spokesperson for the band's label, Interscope/Geffen, the title track from GN'R's oft-delayed, 17-years-in-the-making follow-up to 1991's Use Your Illusion albums, "Chinese Democracy," was made available for download to U.S. radio outlets first thing Wednesday morning (October 22), and already, stations like New York's Q104.3 are spinning the tune — which is almost five minutes long — and have posted it on their Web sites.
The track is a riff-heavy rocker that begins with eerie, soaring guitars and Rose's trademark squeal before launching into an infectious chorus. At first, Rose's voice sounds markedly deeper (think "Mr. Brownstone") than it does on some of GNR's most famous songs, but returns to its high-pitched greatness sporadically throughout the tune. The song ends with a quick explosion, which slowly trails off into silence.
"The release of Chinese Democracy marks a historic moment in rock n' roll," co-managers Irving Azoff and Andy Gould said in a statement. "We're launching with a monumental campaign developed by Gary Arnold and the Best Buy team that matches the groundbreaking sound of the album itself. Guns N' Roses fans have every reason to celebrate, for this is only the beginning."
While several of the album's tracks — including "Chinese Democracy" — have leaked online over the years, this marks the first official and authorized release of new music from Guns in more than nine years; the band's last single, 1999's "Oh My God," was featured on the soundtrack to Arnold Schwarzenegger's film "End of Days."
After years of missed deadlines, inexplicable delays and a handful of false starts, Chinese Democracy has finally been given a concrete release date of November 23. The album will be sold exclusively through Best Buy's retail locations and online through the chain's Web site. The disc will feature 14 tracks, including "Scraped," "Shackler's Revenge" (which appears on the new "Rock Band 2" video game), "Street of Dreams," "If the World" (which accompanies the closing credits of Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe's "Body of Lies") and "This I Love."
While Guns N' Roses have yet to reveal what touring plans — if any — they're planning around the record's release, rumors suggest the band might launch a U.S. tour early next year.
The imminent release of Chinese Democracy means the long wait for fans will soon be over. But it also means a free can of Dr Pepper for every U.S. citizen.
Last March, the beverage company announced it would give away free cans of the soft drink should Guns issue their LP before the close of 2008. Last week, a spokesperson for Dr Pepper told MTV News that, while additional details will be forthcoming, the company's plan to distribute free cans of its product will involve some sort of an online coupon system. "People will go on Dr Pepper's Web site and we will send them a coupon for a free one," the spokesperson confirmed. "It's going to be real easy."

Guns N' Roses in talks for exclusive album release

By Ed Christman
NEW YORK (Billboard) - The June leak of nine allegedly "mastered, finished" tracks from Guns N' Roses' long-delayed "Chinese Democracy" spurred a renewed round of speculation about whether the Axl Rose-led band will finally release the 14-years-in-the-making album.
But some concrete signs are finally emerging that the album's release could be imminent. That's because, according to sources, negotiations are under way for "Chinese Democracy" to come out as an exclusive at one of the big-box retailers -- either Wal-Mart or Best Buy.
Negotiations are also ongoing for conventional record company distribution, another source said.
Guns N' Roses is now managed by Irving Azoff's Front Line Management, and Azoff is a well-known proponent of issuing albums exclusively through retailers. He released the Eagles' "Long Road Out of Eden" through Wal-Mart, much to the chagrin of other merchants.
It's unclear who initiated the Guns N' Roses exclusive negotiations -- Front Line or Interscope, the band's label.
Representatives at Front Line and Interscope with knowledge of the situation couldn't be reached for comment. A Wal-Mart representative said the chain couldn't confirm this fall's exclusive album offerings. Best Buy representatives couldn't be reached for comment.
