In the innocent days of early 2001, I recall renaming the program each week depending on what or who happened to be on the show. When discussing politics, I called the show “Mind Control.” I also started and ended the programs with a recording of Tibetan monks chanting, mixed with whatever struck my interest at the time. That week it was samples from broadcasts of “numbers stations.”

On March 1st, Rob Sterling of the Konformist website, and later, the author of 50 Reasons Not To Vote For George Bush was scheduled by phone to discuss political intrigue in the form of what is known to most people as “conspiracies.” Just as we started the program, author Jonathan Vankin and his (then) wife and noted journalist Deb Vankin walked into the studio unannounced, so I gave them a microphone.

What followed was an unexpected meeting of the minds on the effects of the Bush family on American politics, police brutality at the recent Democratic National Convention, and Jonathan’s books The 50 Greatest Conspiracies Of All Time and The Big Book Of The 70s. The current hot topic of Napster’s legal battles also came up. Of course, anything else that came to mind was also fair game and the conversation was stimulating and informative as always when sharpies like these get together.

Through the wonders of modern technology, this program was digitized from the original 90 minute cassette tape recorded over a decade ago.

I received a book in the mail today which lists yours truly as one of 20 select members in the Conspiracy Hall of Fame and furthermore reveals my true identity as that of alleged CIA disinformation agent , Greg Bishop… Or Maybe I should rephrase that: The photo that accompanies the section on Hall of Famer Adam Gorightly is that of Mr. Bishop. (Which should be a clue to you all that the Walrus is Paul!)

And while I am honored at being among this august group of conspiracy theory stalwarts — which includes the likes of William Cooper, Jim Keith, Jim Marrs and George Orwell — I am also a bit chagrined that my cover has been so thoroughly blown and my true identity revealed as that of the aforementioned Mr. Bishop, who’s also an alleged alien implant victim and diehard fan of the much hated Los Angeles Dodgers.

The New York Times (and other news sources) reported today that Sean David Morton has been sued by the Securities and Exchange Commission for investor fraud.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Morton, he and his Delphi Associates organization have been jumping on the latest new-age bandwagon for the last decade or more, sometimes turning a decent profit. Friends and acquaintances of mine have claimed that they were swindled out of large sums of cash by Morton and his wife. Morton has also claimed to be the “World’s Foremost UFO Researcher” and has been a regular on the lecture circuit and paranormal talk shows.

For more on Morton, see the UFO Watchdog site (now hosted by the Paracast.) Morton sued site owner/ reporter Royce Meyers for libel for $1 million 2003 based on the material Meyers wrote and published. Morton could not prove that any false statements were made and was ordered to pay $16,000 in legal fees to the defendant.

Personally, I have always had a pretty negative opinion of Morton based on some limited interactions with him over the years.

In the Archaeus Project’s 1989 journal Cyberbiological Studies of the Imaginal Component In The UFO Contact Experience Carl Raschke wrote an essay entitled “UFOs: Ultraterrestrial Agents of Cultural Deconstruction.” Raschke offered the idea that the search for meaning behind the UFO enigma was caught up in cultural ideas about aliens coming from other planets in structured craft. He also proposed that whatever was behind the UFO problem was acting as a catalyst for change in cultural ideas about what was possible and even acceptable.

Raschke noted that,”…the UFO puzzle for both investigators and the public unfolds along a trajectory that Jacques Vallee terms that of ‘recursive unsolvability.’ In mathematics a recursive function is one in which the solution cannot be reached by a simple set of successive, linear operations, but is gained only by successive, partial tallies, each of which incrementally redefines the problem itself.”

The UFO debate appears to surround a concept that is continually redefined by a set of partial answers that redefine the question. The end result is that the solution bears less relevance to the original query.

Most can agree that the UFO question has not been solved conclusively by anyone, and the introduction of new concepts like the abduction engima, FOIA document searches and the recent rise of the disclosure movement have changed the focus and character of UFO study over the last 20-30 years. In the 1950s and ’60s, “occupant” cases were dismissed by the mainstream research community as embarrassing and a distraction to the important issue of popularizing the idea that sightings of UFOs were enough to make the subject worthy of respectability and serious study.

With the 1967 publication of Flying Saucer Occupants by Coral and Jim Lorenzen, the idea of “piloted” UFOs was taken more seriously. The idea of abductions was virtually ignored from 1966 (when Interrupted Journey told the strange story of Betty and Barney Hill) until 1981, when Budd Hopkins’ Missing Time was published, and got a real boost in 1987 with Whitley Strieber’s Communion.

Each time a new concept was introduced, the UFO question was redefined. Are we are simply discovering heretofore unrecognized aspects of the phenomenon, or does some symbiosis of reported observations occur, working subrosa in concert with expectations? I would argue that since we are dealing with something that is not amenable to controlled testing and repeatability at will, that expectations very likely play a role in defining the questions and any ultimate answer.

If there is an intelligence or intelligences behind the phenomenon, what it has been doing (probably for millenia) either looks like nonsense or some inscrutable attempt to change human thinking and perception. The very exposure to a UFO or occupant sighting is enough to rearrange one’s concepts of what is real, or even acceptable to our minds and senses. The issue of lasting physical or psychological changes was addressed by Jacques Vallee in his anomalies classification matrix published in his 1990 Book Confrontations.

An article by Benedict Carey from the New York Times reports on research into seemingly nonsensical events and how they are useful in deconstructing our endless search for structure and meaning, injecting helpful doses of depatterning. Participants in a study were asked to read an absurdist short story by Franz Kafka and then given a test that analyzed their ability to find hidden patterns in strings of letters:

The test is a standard measure of what researchers call implicit learning: knowledge gained without awareness. The students had no idea what patterns their brain was sensing or how well they were performing.

But perform they did. They chose about 30 percent more of the letter strings, and were almost twice as accurate in their choices, than a comparison group of 20 students who had read a different short story, a coherent one.

What this may indicate is that UFOs may exist as a mega-experiment in deconstructing our ideas of what is possible, our place in the universe, our ways of accepting what is real and even our methods of cataloging sensory input. The question remains as to who is conducting the experiment, and how much we are either subjects, equal partners, or almost wholly responsible for the experiments and the results.

Ostensibly, the UFO question is whether a non-human source is causing sightings, abductions, radar returns and flying saucer religions, but the intricacies of the problem impinge on so many other areas that we redefine them as well. Examples include reported physics of UFO movement, the question of cultural antecedents and perhaps how our society decides what is acceptable as serious study. That last one may be the most deconstructive effect of all. Changes in our mindset, and not any so-called “answers” may be the real reason behind the whole thing, or at least the most meaningful. There may indeed be “knowledge gained without awareness.”

In the end, this may all be a metaphor for something so inscrutable as to be inexplicable in language or thoughts of which we are currently capable.

John Keel, journalist, author, fortean, and originator of some of the most unique theories on UFOs and the paranormal, died on July 3rd in New York City. His influence on generations of researchers is probably immeasurable.

Born Alva John Kiehle on March 25, 1930, Keel began writing at an early age. He was producing a column in the local newspaper in Perry, New York by age 14, and moved to New York City at 17 to pursue a career as an author and adventurer. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951 and worked for the Armed Forces Radio Network, where he once broadcast a program from inside the Great Pyramid at Giza.

After his tour of duty was over, Keel set out on a trip through the middle east to visit fakirs, magicians and occultists and wrote his first book about the experience, Jadoo, published in 1957. Fate magazine gave Keel an early interest in the UFO enigma, and together with Ivan Sanderson, they began to write a write a book on the subject in the mid-1960s. They quickly found that their views were incompatible, and Keel began research into what would later become seminal books such as The Eighth Tower and UFOs, Operation Trojan Horse.

Keel first challenged the extraterrestrial hyposthesis with his idea of the “superspectrum,” which theorized that UFOs were controlled by intelligences that moved freely between wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum, appearing and disappearing from the infrared and the ultraviolet. Building on the ideas of little-known researchers like Meade Layne and Trevor Constable, he also proposed the theory (and provided ample evidence for this) that UFO entities were not from other planets, but were most likely native intelligences that had been involved with mankind throughout history and prehistory, and perhaps did not have our best interests in mind. These ideas were heresy to the ufological partyline at the time, and continue to be, which is a testament to their originality and implications.

In 1975, Keel rocked the paranormal community with the publication of The Mothman Prophecies, which was his take on the strange events leading up to the Silver Bridge disaster in Point Pleasant, West Virginia on December 15, 1967. In 1966, Keel began investigating reports of a frightening creature in the area around the town. Dubbed “Mothman,” the entity appeared as a headless human form sporting large wings and glowing red “eyes” in the chest area. Mothman did not fly like any known bird, bat or insect, swooping down on unsuspecting motorists and teenagers, and taking off from the ground vertically without moving its “wings” before keeping pace with fleeing cars and disappearing.

Keel documented other weird goings-on in Point Pleasant for nearly two years, including poltergeist phenomena, strange visions, doppelgangers of Keel himself and a scary character who called himself Indrid Cold. Critics claimed that he took storytelling liberties in The Mothman Prophecies, changing events and timelines to suit his narrative, but the essential message of the book still rings true. As Keel stated in the text, “Once you have established a belief, the phenomenon adjusts its manifestations to support that belief and thereby escalate it.” This hypothesis has been tested numerous times since in other UFO “flap” areas, (such as events around the Dulce, New Mexico area in the late 1970s and the more recent Stephenville case) and continues to hold its own.

In the late 1980s, Keel founded the New York Fortean Society and continued to write and lecture periodically well into the late 1990s.

In 1999, I called Keel and asked for a quote for the release of a collection of articles from The Excluded Middle, my old magazine. He politely refused a few times, but finally offered “The truth is out there, but it’s nowhere in this book. Buy mine instead.” The quote went on the back cover of Wake Up Down There: The Excluded Middle Collection when it was published the next year. The title of that book and this blog is based on a strange phone conversation related by Keel in Mothman Prophecies.

In 2000, I finally visited Keel in New York and we had lunch before visiting the Museum of Natural History and a store that sold all manner of bones and skeletons. His comments on the hubris of some scientists and paranormal researchers were cantankerous but delivered with a smile, and he signed my copy of Jadoo.

John A Keel will be sorely missed.

P.S. In some sort of cosmic trickster way, Keel may have gotten a final laugh as my computer locked up and apparently died as I was writing this obituary. After a couple of tries, it miraculously resurrected itself. Long live Keel!

Whether you believe in UFO’s or not, RETRO UFO (3) will take you beyond the typical UFO lecture hall of a hotel conference room and into a new, and nostalgic way of viewing the UFO phenomenon that has intrigued thousands for a millennia. One of the earliest pioneers of that movement was George Van Tassel. George, his wife Eva, and their three daughters lived under Giant Rock, once considered a sacred space to early American Indians. Once known as the largest free standing boulder in the world until its split in February of 2000, Giant Rock and surrounding areas are presently, owned and cared for by the Bureau of Land Management.

It was George and his family during the period of the 1950’s to the 1970’s who hosted Spacecraft Conventions at Giant Rock Airport in the Mojave Desert. Eva, his wife became famous for serving hamburgers and apple pie from her restaurant, The Come On Inn. Records show that Howard Hughes would fly into Giant Rock Airport just to enjoy a piece of Eva’s apple pie. Crowds of thousands gathered from the late 1960’s to the mid 70’s to hear Contactees tell their stories and to share their UFO experiences. George himself, a Contacee would channel messages and talk about boarding a spaceship and meeting “space people” who shared information with him on how to build the Integratron. www.integratron.com an Electro-static generator that was to be used for the cellular rejuvenation of humans.

Many of the original Contactees who participated in the Spacecraft Convention of the 60’s and 70’s have passed on, however a small group still remain and will be at Retro UFO (3) to share their stories. A mountaintop property located near the Hollywood sign and once owned by Howard Hughes is up for sale.

A group of Chicago investors is putting the 138 acres of land just west of the "H" in the sign on the market Wednesday.

The asking price: $22 million.

The property offers a stunning 360-degree panorama of the Los Angeles Basin and the San Fernando Valley, says Fox River Financial Resources, which acquired the land in 2002 for $1,675,000.

"We weren't sure at first what we had," Fox River general partner Keith Dickson said Wednesday. "After looking at it, we kind of feel we got a Van Gogh at a garage sale."

Hughes once planned to build a love nest on the land for his then-paramour Ginger Rogers. Their relationship didn't last, and the property remained undeveloped and in the eccentric billionaire's trust for decades.

The land atop the 1,820-foot Cahuenga Peak consists of five legal lots and "the ridges on the top are nice and smooth," allowing for construction of homes, Dickson said.

The Hollywood sign is just below and east of the property.

Two years ago, city officials and conservationists tried unsuccessfully to raise money to buy the property to make the peak a part of Griffith Park.

Councilman Tom LaBonge, who led the fundraising, said building homes on the peak would ruin one of the city's most famous views.

"That mountain should not be cluttered," LaBonge told the Los Angeles Times. "It's good for the psyche of Los Angeles."

"The city should acquire this land," he added.

Griffith Park suffered two damaging wildfires last year amid extremely dry, hot conditions. A blaze in May burned 800 acres, and one in March tore through the hills near the Hollywood sign and burned 150 acres.

Has success spoiled Robert Sterling? Ever since his recent move to Las Vegas, the former gadfly darling of the konspiracy set has paraded his debauchery before the serious students of parapolitics; held former cohorts up to ridicule and scorn; has done little more than cut and paste lefty opinion rags to present as part of "his" newsletter and has mumbled incoherently about how the konspiracy world has "changed". How is this different than it ever was? In subtle ways, perhaps, but clearly Mr. Sterling has been emboldened by his displacement from the celebrated center of all American kulture (LA) and has taken on the corrupt characteristics of the land of Bugsy Siegel. Rumor has it that these recent charges against Greg Bishop come from the descended remnants of the Meyer Lansky's organization in an attempt to deflect its co-optation of this former great kommentator on konspiracy. This also goes a long way in explaining where Rob is now getting his bucks AND his babes.

Robalini's response: Hopefully, the answer is "Yes!"

I commend Mr Sterling for having the fortitude to step forward and blow the whistle on an individual I once considered a dear friend, but who it now has been revealed was pulling the wool over ALL of our eyes.

And although Mr Sterling is not one to toot is own horn, I want to publicly note that not only has he put his own life on the line by outing Bishop, but that he also oversees his own ministry, which helps wayward young women to get right with the lord, and set themselves upon the path of salvation. Greg Bishop, CIA Disinformation Agent

The Konformist has just received indisputable evidence that Greg Bishop, a former Konformist Kontributing Editor and the winner of a Project Censored prize for his work with the magazine, is in fact a CIA disinformation agent planted within the paranormal community to control the terms of debate among topics such as UFOlogy.

According to the documents, Bishop, whose code name was "H44B-DAY" by the agency, received hundreds of thousands of dollars for his work. His work has led to CIA spin to be inserted within the paranormal community, and apparently the death of at least seven individuals who "knew too much."

Because of these revelations, we advise all Konformist readers to boycott all his work, which now includes numerous books. After all, why pay for something when it's already being financed by the US government?
