Gay Teen Voted Prom Queen at LA High School

Fairfax High School, located in the heart of Los Angeles, recently crowned Sergio Garcia, an 18 year-old openly gay teen, the school’s prom queen at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.
Garcia had told a gym full of seniors a few days earlier, “At one time, prom may have been a big popularity contest where the best-looking guy or girl were crowned king and queen. Things have changed and it's no longer just about who has the most friends or who wears the coolest clothes. I'm not your typical prom queen candidate. There's more to me than meets the eye.”
What began as a stunt by Garcia ended up spurring a great discussion on the school’s campus, and last Saturday the teen went home with the tiara. As for Garcia’s prom attire, he didn’t show up in a prom dress, but a charcoal-grey tux.
As Vanessa Lo, the senior class president, had to say, “It just goes to show how open-minded our class is.”
